Zakat Policy

At Maison Masjid Canada (MMC), we are committed to helping our community fulfill the obligation of Zakat in a correct and transparent way.

How to Calculate Zakat

Who Can Receive Zakat?

The recipients of Zakat are clearly outlined in the Qur’an, Surah At-Tawbah (9:60):

“The alms are only for the poor, the needy, those employed to administer it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, for freeing captives, those in debt, for the cause of Allah, and for the wayfarer. A duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.”

Based on this verse, the eligible recipients include:

  • The Poor (al-fuqarâ’):Those with little or no income.
  • The Needy (al-masâkîn):Individuals in financial hardship.
  • Zakat administrators:Those who collect and distribute Zakat.
  • New Muslims and those whose hearts are to be reconciled.
  • Captives and the enslaved:To support their freedom.
  • Those in debt:Who cannot repay their obligations.
  • In the cause of Allah:For efforts dedicated to His path.
  • The Wayfarer:Stranded travelers in need of assistance.

How to Give Zakat

The default ruling is for Zakat to be distributed directly by the donor to eligible recipients in their local community.

However, it is also permissible to:

  • Appoint a trustee (wakîl) to distribute on your behalf,
  • Use an intermediary organization such as MMC,
  • Send Zakat to another region, particularly if that region has greater needs.

At MMC, we ensure that your Zakat is delivered responsibly to those who need it most.

MMC’s Zakat Policy

“Take alms out of their wealth, so that you may purify and cleanse them thereby, and pray for them; surely your prayer is a comfort to them. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”
(Qur’an 9:103)

Zakat is a fundamental pillar of Islam and a religious obligation on every Muslim who is mature (above puberty), sane, and possesses wealth above the minimum threshold (nisab).

Beyond being a financial duty, Zakat purifies one’s wealth, strengthens one’s connection with Allah (SWT), and fosters social justice by ensuring that the needs of the most vulnerable are met. It promotes fairness, compassion, and circulation of wealth in society.
